Unsettling U.S. Political Climate Galvanizes Muslims to Vote

In late December — after the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, Calif., and the call by Donald J. Trump, now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, for “a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States” — the United States Council of Muslim Organizations, a national umbrella group, announced plans to register a million voters.

“When your existence in society is in danger, you try to mobilize your community,” said the organization’s secretary general, Oussama Jammal. “You have to be part of the entire society.” Read more

Watching with growing horror as the GOP presidential frontrunners, Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, outdo one another with increasingly anti-Muslim policy proposals, Muslim-American groups are organizing in the most proactive way they know how: by boosting the Muslim vote.

Groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Islamic Circle of North America are working with mosques to organize voter registration drives before the November elections, according to the New York Times, so Muslims can make their voices heard.

The Anti-Muslim Republican Vibe Is Getting Muslims Out to Vote

That could be one million new voters.

Republican presidential front-runners Donald Trump and Ted Cruz have taken hardline stances on a range of issues concerning Muslims, and it could come back to bite them if either becomes the nominee.

That’s because civil rights groups have set a target of registering one million new Muslim voters for the coming elections, according to the New York Times. And advocacy groups believe this goal isn’t out of reach in a climate where Trump and Cruz have been accused of stirring anti-Muslim sentiment.

A coalition of Muslim-American organizations announced three major initiatives on Monday in an effort to fight rising anti-Muslim bias, including a drive to register one million voters before the 2016 presidential election. The U.S. Council on Muslim Organizations, an umbrella group that includes several Muslim-American advocacy and religious groups like the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the Muslim Public Affairs Council, the Islamic Circle of North America and several others, convened more than 100 local, regional and national Muslim leaders at a summit in Sterling, Virginia, on Sunday.

An alliance of U.S. Muslim groups said Monday it is launching a national bus tour and voter registration drive to respond to what it calls an alarming rise in anti-Muslim attacks that it says is driven by Islamophobia in 2016 presidential campaign rhetoric.

Alleged bias attacks directed at mosques rose markedly in November after deadly attacks in Paris and California were linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

We’ve come a long way since President George W. Bush’s visit to a mosque in the aftermath of the al-Qaida attacks of September 11 where he declared “Islam is peace.” A long way in the wrong direction.

The anti-Muslim prejudice percolating for years has erupted into a full-blown hysteria, fueled by among others, Republican presidential candidates Donald Trump, who has suggested a ban on foreign Muslims entering the U.S.; Ben Carson, who doesn’t think a Muslim should be allowed to become president; and Jeb Bush and Ted Cruz, both of whom believe the U.S. should weed out Muslim refugees from Syria and accept only Christians.

Islamic Coalition Responds To Terrorist Attacks By Calling For Massive Muslim Voter Drive

A coalition of U.S.-based Muslim groups claiming that anti-Muslim backlash is on the rise in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris and San Bernardino hopes to register one million people to vote before the 2016 election as part of a “civic empowerment initiative.”

Oussama Jammal, the secretary general of the U.S. Council on Muslim Organizations, also announced in a press conference held Monday at the National Press Club that the group will “seek to increase emergency preparedness for Islamic institutions and individuals to address the rising number of incidents of hate crimes that are unfortunately happening nationwide.”

Donald Trump has been heavily criticized for his stance on Islam, but a recent statement by American Muslim leaders may be the strongest warning yet that the candidate has received over his proposed policies.

American Muslim Alliance director Mahdi Bray announced at the National Press Club, “Let it be heard, and clear, to all political candidates, be it Donald Trump or whoever else, that indeed, if you engage in Islamophobia, if you engage in demagoguery and bigotry, you will pay a political price.”

He went on, “Because we’re going to register our people and we’re going to use our ballot and we’re going to ‘take our souls to the polls and make sure you are out of there.”

(CNSNews.com) – Leaders of several American Muslim organizations warned Donald Trump and other presidential candidates Monday that if they engage in bigotry and “Islamophobia” they will pay a political price because Muslim voters – in the words of one – will mobilize and “make sure you are out of there.”

“Let it be heard, and clear, to all political candidates, be it Donald Trump or whoever else, that indeed, if you engage in Islamophobia, if you engage in demagoguery and bigotry, you will pay a political price,” American Muslim Alliance director Mahdi Bray said at the National Press Club.

America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization announced Monday a new initiative which aims to increase the registration of American Muslim voters for the 2016 elections to 1 million.
